Interview: Alessio Cristiano

Neapolitan, London-based producer Alessio Cristiano has been on a rapid rise over the past few years, making a massive impact with his futuristic and progressive sensibilities. Landing on VTOPIΛ with his Minds EP, the long-awaited two-track offering is out now and we had the chance to catch up with him on Only Techno.

Welcome to Only Techno, Alessio! Where are we speaking to you from?

Hello lads, I am based in London

Could you introduce yourself to our readers that might not be familiar with you?

I’m a DJ/producer from Naples, Italy and I started DJing at the age of 18. After a few years I approached the world of production. Recently I have released several tracks on Octopus Recordings, Purified, Dear Deer and others. I’m really excited for my next release, the “MINDS” EP will be out on VTOPIΛ on the 24th of February.

Congratulations on your new Minds EP. Can you tell us how this one came about and what the tracks mean to you?

Well, it was actually quite an old idea, and one day I decided to edit it and so I completed the project. I’m very happy with the final result and all the support it’s getting around the world.

“Minds” is a very energetic, dance floor track with a melody that slowly builds and then explodes. “Genesis” is a slightly more romantic track, still very groovy, but leaves room for dreaming and imagining being in another dimension.

How did you get into producing and DJing?

I initially started playing electric guitar and drums at the age of 6, as my father is a musician so it’s also thanks to him that I approached the world of music.

When I grew up I had many older friends who were passionate about electronic music and therefore by always being with them, let’s say they transmitted this passion. And today I am grateful for that.

You have had some releases on some major imprints such as Purified Records, Octopus Recordings and Senso Sounds to name a few, and your new release is out on VTOPIΛ. How did you come to connect with them?

At this particular point in my career VTOPIΛ exactly matched my sonic standards and musical vision, so I didn’t think much about it before sending my tracks. I am happy that my tracks have been accepted immediately and that they are already experiencing great success.

If you could collaborate with any producer or artist, who would it be and why?

Well it’s difficult to answer this question, there are so many talented producers out there! If I had to say names surely my secret dream would be to do a collaboration with Mind Against, Tale of Us, Kevin de Vries, Stephan Bodzin or Dixon. I think their productions are masterpieces, they manage to convey feelings and emotions through synths, basses and grooves.

Your tracks receive consistent support from some of the biggest artists in the melodic house and techno scene – how does it feel seeing your tracks being played out by them?

It’s a very strong emotion, seeing DJs of this caliber playing my tracks at massive festivals, in front of huge crowds.
I am very happy, satisfied and grateful, also this only encourages me to continue along this path in the best possible way.

What has been your biggest “pinch me” moment so far?

Definitely when Kevin de Vries posted the video playing “Minds” at Printworks for Afterlife. I was shocked.

What else do you have coming up over the next few months?

I have other releases and gigs planned, I will announce the details shortly. At the same time I always keep working on new material
